The first World Congress of the European Society of Aesthetic Gynecology (ESAG) took place in Rome on 20 and 21 April 2016.
The scientific session was open by Dr. Alexander Bader, president of the society, who provided a definition of the female genital cosmetic surgery, emphasizing the main differences of the procedures belonging to this category with the female genital mutilations, defined by WHO as “the partial or total removal of the female genitalia for cultural or other non-therapeutic reasons”.
The first day held an interesting round table under the patronage of SICPRE chaired by Dr. Massimiliano Brambilla and moderated by Dr. Stefania De Fazio and Prof. Giuseppina Onesti, in which different reconstructive surgery techniques of the female genitalia were presented.
On the second day, several cosmetic genital surgery techniques were presented, including labia minora reduction, labia majora remodeling, clitoroplasty, vaginoplasty, and perineoplasty. In addition, a session was dedicated to the use of lasers for vaginal rejuvenation.
Thanks to PSG, I have had the opportunity to attend this conference as a speaker and to present the results of the research projects on genital regenerative surgery carried out at the Department of Plastic Surgery of the Second University of Naples, with Professor Francesco D’Andrea.
I would like to thank the PSG, the SICPRE, and Professor Francesco D’Andrea for such a highly formative opportunity, which allowed me to attend scientific presentations and videos of surgeries related to this chapter of plastic surgery that, although is becoming more popular, it is not easily accessible to the surgical trainee.
